The company was created after James B. Lansing left Altec Lansing where he held the position of Vice President. Lansing in 1949, his associate Bill Thomas develops the notoriety of the mark which gradually becomes a reference in the matter of domestic speakers.
In 1969, JBL was sold to Jervis, which later became Harman International. The brand is maintained and distinguished by its products which are used in particular in recording studios, concert halls and outdoor festivals. They also served to develop the THX audio standard.
The company is now organized into two independent divisions, JBL Consumer for the general public and JBL Professional for the professional market.
